Hebrew Learning Fun! Pay Attention! Begin With Prayer: Mishlei 1:22

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, And shall be quiet without fear of evil.'

JPS 1917

Meditation: Has anyone ever told you to “Pay Attention?” Perhaps you were daydreaming on a pretty spring day? Imagining making a snowman on a cold winter afternoon? Your mind was someplace else, and you needed to turn it to whatever was at hand. Perhaps danger is approaching, a fast car in a parking lot, or a fierce snake in the grass. Someone is calling out for you. Your attention is needed. That is the meaning we see in the Bible word “hearkeneth.” In Hebrew we read the word as עמש /shah-mah/. This is a rich word that invites the reader not only to hear what is being said, but to “hear intelligently.”

But, what does “hear intelligently” mean? Have you ever been told something, just to have the thought go in one ear and out the other? You heard what the person said, and probably could even repeat in back, but truth be told, you were not really listening with all your heart.

Well, the book of Mishlei is a grand adventure into the very wisdom of Hashem. He wants you to /shah-mah/ listen. Like any exciting adventure, danger awaits around every corner. However, if you listen to a mysterious figure in the book of Mishlei called “Wisdom,” you will find the key to dwelling safely in this dangerous land! You will have no fear of the evil that lurks.

So, pay attention! /Shah-mah/! A grand adventure awaits!

Hands On Fun: Play Telephone! The first person whispers a sentence or phrase into the next person’s ear. Each person whispers what they heard to the next person. When the last person hears the phrase, they are to speak it aloud. See if the final person’s saying matches the first! How silly did your sayings get? Keep this in mind during today’s lesson!

Bonus: You may choose to use plastic cups and hold them to your ears. Alternatively, you may take empty soup cans and tape yarn to the bottoms, creating an old fashioned phone.

Talk About It: Has there ever been a time that paying attention to something saved your life? Why can it be hard to pay attention sometimes? What can you do to help yourself pay attention to what is important?

Art Time: Draw a picture of someone listening to a warning, and staying safe from danger. (Example: avoiding a snake in the grass)

Please note: our focus is the root word. Adaptation grammatically may be applied.

End by saying a bracha in your own words over the children.
